  • Var(3x - 2y) = 14.8

If X and Y are independent RVs, then

  • E[aX±bY] = aE[X] ±bE[Y]

  • Var(aX±bY) = a^2 Var(X) + b^2 Var(Y)

Using above formula,

 Var(3X - 2Y)

 =3^2Var(X) + 2^2 Var(Y)

 =9\times 1.2 + 4\times 1

 =10.8 + 4

 =14.8
