 {x}^{2}  - (a + b)x + k = 0 \\  \\  {a}^{2}  - (a + b)a  + k \:  = 0
 {a}^{2}  -  {a}^{2}  - ab + k = 0 \\  \\
 - ab + k = 0 \\  \\ k = ab
