In the silk industry, mulberry is an important raw material.

The scientific rearing of silkworms to produce silk fibres is called sericulture. For the rearing of silkworms, mulberry leaves are very important because the growing worms feed on leaves of mulberry trees, hence it becomes a raw material for silk industry.

Mulberry silk is also a type of silk along with Tasar, Eri and Muga silk. India is second largest producer of silk fibres after China and more than 80% of the silk fibres produced in India are mulberry silk. Silk farmers grow mulberry tress so, that it can be used to feed the silkworms and hence it becomes the raw material of this industry.
