Put the value of x and y
-(1/5+3/7)=-1/5+(-3/7)
-(7+15/35)=-7-15/35
-22/35=-22/35
verified

It is verified -(x + y) = (- x)+ (-y) for x = \frac{1}{5} and y = \frac{3}{7} .

Given:

x = \frac{1}{5} and y = \frac{3}{7}

To verify:

-(x + y) = (- x)+ (-y)

Concept used:

First substitute the value of x and y in LHS and solve it and then substitute the value of x and y in RHS and solve it.

After solving we get LHS = RHS .

Solution:

Step 1: Substitute the value of x and y in LHS :  - (x + y)

LHS =  -(x + y)

LHS =  - (\frac{1}{5} + \frac{3}{7})

LHS = - (\frac{1 \times 7 + 3 \times 5}{35})

[LCM of 5 and 7 = 35]

LHS =  -( \frac{7 + 15}{35})

LHS = - \frac{22}{35}

Step 2: Substitute the value of x and y in RHS :  (- x)+ (-y)

RHS = (- x)+ (-y)

RHS = (- \frac{1}{5}) +(- \frac{3}{7})

RHS = (\frac{-1 \times 7 + (-3 \times 5) }{35})

[LCM of 5 and 7 = 35]

RHS = (\frac{ -7 -15 }{35})

RHS = (\frac{ -22 }{35})

RHS = - \frac{22}{35}

From step 1 and 2 we see that LHS = RHS.

Hence, -(x + y) = (- x)+ (-y) it is verified.
