If a current carrying wire is placed against a magnetic needle, this deflects the magnetic needle. It is because the magnetic field around the current carrying wire exerts on the magnetic needle a mechanical force and generates a movement thereon. So if a magnet is light and free to move then the current flowing through a conductor keeping close to it will create motion in the magnet. The opposite should also be valid, as it is found to be so. That is a magnetic field will exert a force on and create motion in a current carrying conductor.
