Alluri Sitarama Raju led the Rampa Rebellion of 1922 in the Godavari Agency of Madras Presidency in British India. It was a tribal uprising which started in August 1922 and continue till Raju was captured and killed in May 1924.

The tribals of the Rampa administrative area fended for themselves by burning out a portion of the forest for cultivation. But the British wanted to take control of the land at the Godavari Agency which was notably famous for malaria and black water fever. When the British used the land for commercial purposes, the traditional cultivation methods were greatly affected and the tribal people were not paid any heed. This led to the beginning of the Rampa Rebellion.
