Answer:

Formal charge =no. Of valence electrons -bond pair -2× lone pair

For ph3 formal charge will be,

                            8-3-2×1=3

we take some more examples of finding formal charge,

example,

BrCl₃

in Br valence electron = 7

shared electrons = 6

unshared electrons = 4

formal charge , F = v - s/2 - u

                         F= 7-6/2 -4

                         F =  0

formal charge in So₂

      S atom has  6 electron out of which 4 are in sharing with 2 oxygen and 2 remains as lone pair,so no exchange of electrons their and theu have 0 formal charge.
