Preparation from Primary Alcohols

The general formula is:

                                                         Alkaline KMnO2

                                     RCH2OH-------------------------------> RCOOH

                                                     H3O+ (hydronium ion)

Preparation from Aldehydes

The general formula is:

                                                        Tollen's reagents

                                        CH3CHO----------------------->CH3COOH
