Carbon chloride i.e. CCL4 is produced by the action of natural gas (methane) with its subsequent action with UV light (sunlight).

This is a process of reaction is termed as the radial chain mechanism reaction. Hydro-chloric acid is released as a by-product after the chain of reactions come to a final point.

At first, methane(CH4) reacts with chlorine(Cl2) to give CH3CL and HCL.

Then, CH3CL further reacts with Cl2 to give CH2CL2 and HCL, and CHCL3 and finally,  CCL4 in the fourth stage.
