Coal is mostly carbon with variable amounts of other elements : cheifly hydrogen , sulphur , oxygen , and nitrogen . Coal is formed when dead plant matter decays into peat and is converted into the coal by the heat and the pressure of Deep bureal over millions of years .
OR
Millions of years ago , dense forest got buried under the soil due to natural processes like storms , floods and earthquake . These got compressed as more and more soil got deposited over them . When they got buried deep in the soil , they werr exposed to very high pressure and temperature . Under these conditions , these slowly got converted to coal . The process of formation of coal dead vegetation is called carbonization .
