As the ovules develop into seeds, the ovary begins to ripen and the ovary wall, the pericarp, may become fleshy (as in berries or drupes), or form a hard outer covering (as in nuts). In some multiseeded fruits, the extent to which the flesh develops is proportional to the number of fertilized ovules.

FORMATION OF FRUITS:
- Fruits are the matured ovary that encloses the seeds as a protective layer.
- Seeds are formed by the fertilization of the ovule by anther. This results into the formation of embryo within the seed.
- As the ovule is fertilized, this results in the secretion of some hormones which leads to the dehiscence of the petals and other wholes of flower.
- The ovary that remains slowly starts growing due to deposition of stored food inside them.
- They can become fleshy or fibrous or stone like. This results in the formation of fruit.
