Very pure hydrogen chloride is produced by combining chlorine and hydrogen: Cl2 + H2 → 2 HCl. As the reaction is exothermic, the installation is called an HCl oven or HCl burner. The resulting hydrogen chloride gas is absorbed in deionized water, resulting in chemically pure hydrochloric acid.

It is also produced by the reaction of some chlorides (e.g., phosphorus trichloride, PCl3, or thionyl chloride, SOCl2) with water and as a by-product of the chlorination of many organic substances (e.g., methane or benzene). Hydrochloric acid is prepared by dissolving gaseous hydrogen chloride in water.
