Methane is a covalent compound. Carbon atom atomic number is 6. It's electronic configuration is 2, 4. Methane formula is CH4. Hydrogen atom m and needs again to be in stable electronic configuration of nearest Noble gas helium. Therefore one atom of carbon shares with four electrons with four atoms of hydrogen to form four covalent bonds.
