Like coal, petroleum was also formed from the remains of dead sea animals. The bodies of these dead organisms got covered by layers of years, the bodies were converted into a liquid called petroleum in the absence of air, under high temperature and pressure. It is a dark coloured, viscous, and foul-smelling liquid usually called crude oil. Many useful compounds are derived from petroleum. They can be obtained by the process of fractional distillation, which involves separation of substances with different boiling points. The process of converting into useful products with the help of fractional distillation is known as refining of petroleum.
