THE FORMATION OF SOUND is based on the principle of hitting two objects with each other. when the two or more objects hit each other, it produces a VIBRATION in the surrounding atmosphere. The vibration is due to the quick back-and-forth movement of AIR MOLECULES. This way the air molecules move and produce SOUND - a Longitudinal wave which reaches our ear canal so that we can  hear.

Sound is longitudinal pressure waves in the air, It can be produced in a couple of ways in a collision. The impact can set up pressure waves and or ringing in the bodies themselves which then interact with the surrounding medium to produce audible sounds. This is the mechanism of a bell.
