A buffer is a chemical substance that helps maintain a relatively constant pH in a solution, even in the face of addition of acids or bases.

▶When an acid or base is added to a buffer system, the effect on pH change can be large or small, depending on both the initial pH and the capacity of the buffer to resist change in pH.

The buffer index can be defined as the differential ratio of the increase in the amount of strong acid or strong base added, to pH variation.

Buffer index=no.of moles of acids or bases added in 1 litre/change in pH
