Dolomite

Explanation:

  • When more than 50 percent of a carbonate rock is composed of the mineral dolomite (CaCO_{3}.MgCO_{3}) ,the rock is called dolostone or simply dolomite.
  • When calcite occupies more than 10 percent in such a rock(between 10 and 50 percent)the resultant rock is named a 'calcitic dolomite'.
  • A dolomite with an appreciable amount of ferrous carbonate is called ferrodolomite.
  • Ferrous carbonate entering into a solid solution with dolomite imparts a buff color to the rock upon oxidation.
  • The common impurities in natural dolomites are anhydrite and gypsum.
