A screw gauge of 100 divisions will move the cap scale along the main scale by 1/100 of mm-0.01 mm. This is the minimum value up to which a screw gauge can measure and is known as its least count. Or it is defined as the ratio between the pitch of the screw and the number of division on the circular scale.

Explanation:

The linear distance covered by a screw head in every rotation is called the pitch of the screw gauge. Pitch of a screw gauge is given by :

pitch =\dfrac{Main\ scale\ reading\ revealed\ on\ rotating\ circular\ disc}{no\ of\ rotations}

The relation between the pitch and least count is given by :

Least\ count=\dfrac{pitch}{no\ of\ division\ on\ circular\ scale}

If we want to find the pitch of a screw gauge the zero of the head scale and the any division on the pitch scale is coincided. Then the screw is rotated and distance on the pitch scale is rotated.
