Fouling
Explanation:
Fouling is a common problem while operating most types of heat exchangers. Fouling is defined as the accumulation of unwanted deposits on the surface of heat transfer. The layer of accumulation is called the foulant and it causes resistance to heat transfer. The flow area is reduced by the deposits formed, which results in an increased velocity for a given volumetric flow rate.
To reduce fouling, we can take the below steps:
- lower heat transfer rate.
- higher outlet temperature on the hot side (and lower dT hot)
- lower outlet temperature on the cold side (and lower dT cold)
