Galileo Galilei

Galileo GalileiThe foundations of dynamics were laid at the end of the 16th century by Galileo Galilei who, by experimenting with a smooth ball rolling down an inclined plane, derived the law of motion for falling bodies; he was also the first to recognize that force is the cause of changes in the velocity of a body.

Dear student,

Classical mechanics now also known as Newtonian mechanics, seemed to have its foundation back since the time of Aristotle where he defined mechanics in terms of natural and unnatural motion or position of object and stated that all the objects wants to come at their natural position.

Aristotle put forward his own models of explaining the mechanical phenomenon on earth like the straight-line motion model, geocentric model which back then due to lack of handful knowledge were accepted by people to be correct.

Later, came another scientist Philoponus who put forward his concept of impetus trying to limit the Artistotle's model. He stated that during motion, a body stores some force inside it and that stored force is called impetus.

Then during the seventeenth century, the first ever scientist, Galileo, to have used scientific methods to explain the physical phenomenon started giving the foundational assumptions about the different body at rest and motion. Hence, he was considered to have laid the foundation for classical mechanics.
