Sir Roger Penrose, besides being a sir and likely the only person in this universe, who still uses an overhead projector, is a great mathematical physicist. He has a long list of achievements under his belt, but the focus of this lecture is one of the most controversial fields of interest in modern physics and neuroscience — the link between consciousness and quantum mechanics. There are literally volumes written about the nature of consciousness, especially from the philosophical point of view and yet there is no single universally accepted explanation for our self awareness. Penrose subscribes to a view that conscious experience itself arises from a particular objective feature of the physical laws. This, however, must go beyond our current understanding of the laws of quantum processes and their relation to macroscopic phenomena. If this already sounds confusing, get ready to be even more baffled as in this talk Penrose gives all the gritty details behind his recent work on consciousness.
