Explanation:

This is because birds and mammals are warm-blooded animals (homeothermic) and they need a constant supply of energy to maintain their body temperature, what so ever the outside temperature may be.

A four chambered heart keeps the oxygenated and deoxygenated bloods separate and hence, more oxygen is supplied to the cells for more respiration and hence more energy.

However, in a 3-chambered heart, there is some mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated bloods resulting in less oxygen being supplied to the cells for less respiration and hence less energy is released.
