Four equal circles are described about four corners of a square so that each touches the two of the others. Find the area of the part of the square enclosed by the circles if the side of the square is 14 cm.

Given,

square side = 14 cm

diameter of circle = 14/2 cm

= 7 cm

radius of circle = 7/2 cm

= 3.5 cm

area enclosed by circle = area of square - area of 4 circles

= 14 × 14 cm2 - 4 × pi × r × r

= 196 cm2 - 4 × 22/7 × 7/2 × 7/2 ( simplify )

= 196cm2 - 22 × 7

= 196 - 154 cm2

= 42 cm2
