Four fisherman all lay down to sleep, not having counted or divided their catch of fish. in the middle of the night, one of them woke up, and decided to divide the pile of fish and take his own share. but the number of fish was not divisible by four. however, he found he could throw one fish away, then take exactly a quarter. this he did and left. later, the second, the third, and the fourth fisherman woke in turn and each went through the same process. (a) what is the minimum number of fish in the catch that fulfils these conditions? (b) what is the second minimum number? (c) what is the general formula for all such numbers?
