The length of AC is 4\sqrt{5} units.

Explanation:

Given: Four friends a b c and d are standing in the reference to the wall situated at the origin 0,0 painted go green with the following respective coordinates A(2,4) B(-2,4) C(-2,-4) and D(2,-4)

To find: Length of AC

Solution:

First we need to plot A(2,4) B(-2,4) C(-2,-4) and D(2,-4) on the coordinate grid.

Consider the attached pic, in the attached pic the points are ploted on the coordinate grid.

Now, we need to check whether AB, BC, CD, AD are equal. So, we need to use the distance formula.

We know that distance between two points (x_{1}, y_{1}) and (x_{2} ,y_{2}) is \sqrt {(x_{2}-x_{1})^{2} +(y_{2}-y_{1})^{2}}

Now, AB=\sqrt{(-4)^{2}+(0)^{2}  } =4

BC=\sqrt{(0)^{2}+(-8)^{2} } =8

CD=\sqrt{(4)^{2}+(0)^{2} } =4

AD=\sqrt{(0)^{2}+(-8)^{2} } =8

Clearly, the four distances are not equal, hence they are not equal.

Now, AC=\sqrt{(-4)^{2} +(-8)^{2}} =4\sqrt{5}

Hence, the length is 4\sqrt{5} units.
