Given : Four particles, each of mass 1 kg are situated on x axis at distance 1 m, 2 m, 4 m and 8 m respectively from the origin.

To Find :  The resulting gravitational potential due to this system at the origin will be

-G

-2G

-7G/4

-15G/8

Solution

V = - Gm/d

m = 1 kg

d  = 1  , 2 ,  4 , 8  m

V = -(G/1  +  G/2   +  G/4  +  G/8   )

=> V   =- G(8 + 4 + 2 + 1)/8

=> V = -G(15/8)

=> V = (-15/8)G

resulting gravitational potential due to this system at the origin will be  -15G/8
