let us assume ashok's age as x and bala's age as y
then
x-4=4(y-4)
x=4y-12 ----(1)
x+3=3(y+3)
x=3y+6 -----(2)

equating (1) and (2)
4y+12=3y+6
y=18
x=3*18+6=60

Given :

Four years ago Ashok's age was four times that of Bala .Three years later Ashok's age will be thrice the age of Bala.

To Find:

Find present age of Ashok and Bala.

Solution:

Let

Present age of Ashok = X

Present age of Bala = Y

Before four years:

Age of Ashok was four times age of Bala:

(X -4) = 4× (Y -4)

⇒ X -4 = 4 Y - 16

⇒ X - 4 Y = -16 + 4

⇒ X - 4Y = -12           ...1)

After three years:

Age of Ashok will three times age of Bala:

(X +3) = 3× (Y +3)

⇒X + 3 = 3 Y + 9

⇒X - 3 Y = 9 - 3

⇒X - 3 Y = 6              ...2)

On solving equation 1) and equation 2), we get :

X = 60

Y = 18

Means:

Present age of Ashok = X = 60 years

Present age of Bala = Y = 18 years
