Four years ago Ravi was 8 years older than Priya. If he is now 3 times as old as she is, find their present ages.

Consider the present ages of riya and priya are x and y respectively ,then

from statement 1 we have riya age is twice of priya

so x=2y → equation 1

from statement 2 we have three years ago which means when priya is y-3 and riya is x-3 , riya age is thrice of priya

so (x-3)=3(y-3) by solving it

we have x=3y-6 → equation 2

substitute x=2y from equation 1 in equation 2

hence

2y=3y-6

y=6

From our assumption y is priya’s age

So Priya age is 6

Then present Riya Age becomes double that of Priya’s present age

2*age of priya = 2*6=12

Present age of Riya is 12

x-4=y+8

x-y=12

according to 2 condition

x=3y

hence u get

x=18
