Concept-

Suppose a : b :: c : d , then a : b = c : d, then  'd' is called as the fourth proportion of a, b and c.

Given-

a, b and c are given as x , 2x , ( x + 1 )

Find-

Calculate the fourth proportion of x , 2x and ( x + 1 )

Solution-

Suppose that the fourth proportion is 'a'.

x : 2x :: ( x + 1 ) : a

x . a = 2x ( x + 1 )

ax = 2x ( x + 1 )

ax = 2x² + 2x

a = 2x² + 2x / x

a = 2x + 2

Fourth proportion = 2x + 2

Therefore, the fourth proportion is 2x + 2.
