A fractionating column makes the process of fractional distillation more efficient than the process of simple distillation by providing increased possibilities for condensation of the liquid. A fractionating column packed with glass beads or glass helices provides a large surface area for the vapours to collide and lose energy so that they can be condensed and distilled quickly. Increasing the length of the fractionating column would also increase the efficiency of fractional distillation.
