Ask sports interview questions that require more than a yes or no answer. Instead of "Do you have any sports heroes?" ask "Who do you look up to ask your heroes in sports?"

Overcoming Challenges

Kids enjoy discussing the drama of a disaster that was overcome. Ask them to talk about nail-biting incidents that had happy endings. Have they had any serious injuries? How did they deal with these and overcome the obstacles? Do they have time management issues? Is it difficult to balance sports with school work? Does the school administration support them? How? Ask their opinion about judges' or referees' decisions. If they disagreed with an official, how did they handle it? For team sports, how do they or their teammates feel about time on the bench? Ask about their fans and their friendships.

Example:

What do your friends think of your athletic success? How do you handle missing out on activities with friends because of your athletic schedule?

Daily Routines

Ask the kids to describe what a typical day is like. Especially, for top athletes, how much time is spent training and practicing? Ask them to tell you about one or two things they do in training that directly contribute to their success. Kids like to talk about food. Ask about their diets. Are there any foods they don't enjoy that they force themselves to consume? Are there any foods that they need to avoid? How difficult is it to control their diets?

Example:

Athletes have to eat healthy foods to be in top shape. What foods do you have to give up when you're in training?

Teammates, Parents and Advice

Ask the athletes to describe their teammates. Have they had any difficulties with teammates, and how did they handle them? Ask if they've ever felt pressured by a coach or their parents. What have they learned about their own endurance? About their personal limits? What is the role of their parents? Have their parents always been supportive of their sports activities?
