Parts of speech - Altar is a noun......Ater is a verb

Meaning

Altar- A raised platform, place or structure before which religious ceremonies and rites are performed including offering of sacrifices. (वेदी).  For christians it means a holy table in a church.

Example-

1. The tribesmen built an altar to God and made a sacrifice.
2. The bride approached the altar.


Alter - To change, modify or become different (बदलना, फेरबदल करना ) 

Example-

1. The plan had to be altered at the last moment.
2. Some part of the syllabus has been altered this time.
