Answer:

(i) let number =x

x+8=12

(ii) let number =x

x-11=-2

(iii) let number =x

1/6×X=7

(iv) let number =x

5x+1=71

(v) let one number =x

let other number =y

x+5y=29

(vi) let number=x

a. Let the no. be x

x + 8 = 12

x = 12 - 8

= 4

b. Let the no. be x

x - 11 = -2

x = 11 - 2

= 9

c. Let the no. be x

 \frac{1}{6}  \times x \:  = 7

x = 7 × 6

= 42

d. Let the no. be x

1 + 5x = 71

5x = 71 - 1

5x = 70

x \:  =  \frac{70}{5}

x = 14

e. Let the smaller no. be x

x + 5 + x = 29

= 2x + 5 = 29

2x = 29 - 5

2x = 24

x \:  =  \frac{24}{2}

x = 12

f. Let the no. be x

5x - 3 = 17

5x = 17 + 3

5x = 20

x \:  =  \frac{20}{5}

x = 4
