The constitutional monarchy was set up in France as a result of the French Revolution. This new code came into the process in 1791. The King of France was dethroned and executed in 1792. Thereon, France became a republic. The First Republic was an unsteady government that met internal rebellions and foreign invasion. The reign of terror that began in France saw the mass killing of people and a nationwide violence. Ultimately Napoleon Bonaparte (the First Consul and the later emperor of France), put an end to this situation and the Republic. Although France had a constitution Napoleon ruled as a despot. In 1815 he was removed and the Bourbon Kings were reestablished with a "compromise" constitution that restricted their influences but still accepted them as leaders by Divine Right.

Thereon France became a constitutional monarchy in 1815. The ruling king Charles X was violently deposed in 1830 when he rejected to share power with the parliament. His Louis-Philippe who agreed to rule as a lawful monarch was placed on the throne. He maintained the existing constitution yet frequently intervened in the matters of government. Finally, the people of France dethroned him and became a republic in 1848 (second time). This republic was also temporary as its President, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, the successor of Napoleon I, soon declared himself the emperor of France in 1851. He ruled with the assistance of legislative assembly. He was abdicated in the year 1871 when France was defeated in the Franco-Prussian War. After this, the third republic was announced.
