In the year 1871, following the defeat of France in the Franco-German war, Alsace – Lorraine was ceded by France to Germany.

Alsace – Lorraine, which is an area of about 13,000 square kilometres, was given back to France in 1919, following World War I. Then in 1940, during World War II, it was again ceded to Germany.

However, it was given back to France in 1945.
