Free notebooks were distributed equally among children of a class.The number of notebooks each child got was one eighth of the number of children.Had the child been half,each child would have got 16 note books.How many notebooks were distributed in all?

Let number of notebooks n and children x .

Now each child will get n/x notebook which is given equal to x/8

 \frac{n}{x}  =  \frac{x}{8}  \implies {x}^{2}  = 8n

Now if children are half or x/2 , then each will get

n/(x/2) = 2n/x = 16(given)

2n = 16x \implies n = 8x \:o r \:  \: x =  \frac{n}{8}

So

( \frac{n}{8} ) {}^{2}  = 8n \\  \\  {n} = 64 \times 8 = 512
