PANAJI: The government of Goa has decided to honour 17 freedom fightersincluding one from Andhra Pradesh for their contribution to Goa's freedom struggle, on the occasion of Goa Liberation Day at the state- level function to be held on December 19, 2013. Of the 17 freedom fighters, nine are living and eight posthumous. The living one who will be honoured are Rohidas (Daad) R Desai, (native of Cuncolim, Salcete and a resident of Panaji), Vassudev Kalangutkar (Baman Vaddo, Oxel, Siolim Bardez), Joaquim Xavier Pinto (Kamat Enclave Apts, Santerxeth, Aldona, Bardez), Ganesh Gopal Harwalkar (Bramhakarmali Nagargao, Valpoi-Sattari), Shaikh Abdul Gani Shaikh Yussuf (GRB Colony Near Karmali School Headland Sada, Mormugao), Sanjay K Prabhu Dessai (Virnoda Village, Khalchawada, Pernem), Shyamsundar R Naik, (Abhinav Hsg Complex, Alto, Porvorim), Ginjupali R Chaudhary, (Guntur-6 Andhra Pradesh) and Sadanand Gurudas R Teli, (Baili Peth, Bicholim).

Until now, the government used to honour freedom fighters on the occasion of Goa Revolution day which is observed at Azad Maidan, Panaji on June 18 - held annually to commemorate the clarion call given by Ram Manohar Lohia to start a civil disobedience movement against the Portuguese.
