Moderates

The Early Nationalists were known as the Moderates. They were a group of political leaders in the Indian National Congress who were active between 1885 and 1905. W.C. Banerjee, Rash Behari Ghosh, Surendranath Banerjee, R.C. Dutt, Dadabhai Naoroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhale were some of them. They had faith in the British sense of justice and integrity. They tried to achieve their aims by using constitutional and peaceful means. They believed in open-minded and moderate politics.

Radicals

The radical nationalists or extremist leaders dominated the Indian National Congress between 1905 to 1920. They believed that boldness was required for any success. They wanted complete Swaraj. They encouraged radical methods in politics like boycott of British goods and government services. Lala Lajpat Rai from Punjab, Bipin Chandra Pal from Bengal and Bal Gangadhar Tilak from Maharashtra were the prominent leaders of the radicals.

Moderates believed in cooperation and reconciliation.Most of the moderate leaders were inspired by the ideas of western philosophers like Mill, Burke, Spencer, and Bentham. Moderates imbibed western ideas of liberalism, democracy, equity, and freedom.

Extremists or Radicals:

                              Extremist were radical in their approach. Demands of extremists were aggressive.

Extremists wanted to end the British rule.Extremist denounced British rule and defied it. Many of them(Extremists) Were arrested because of anti-British activities.Extremists believed in militant methods including swadeshi and boycott. According to Tilak, freedom to be fought for.

Examples of extremist leaders include Bala Gangadhara Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal and Lala Lajpat Rai, Aurobindo Ghosh.
