Given

  • Velocity of light in air = 3 × 10⁸ m/s
  • Refractive index of glass = 1.5

To Find

  • Velocity of light in glass

Solution

  • ☯ Here we are gonna use the Snell's law
  • sin i/sin r = n₂/n₁ = v₁/v₂

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✭ According to the Question :

➞ n₂/n₁ = v₁/v₂

  • Refractive index of glass = 1.5
  • Refractive index of air (approx) = 1
  • Speed of light in air = 3 × 10⁸ m/s
  • Speed of light in glass = ?

  • ➞ 1.5/1 = (3 × 10⁸)/v₂

  • ➞ 1.5 = (3 × 10⁸)/v₂

  • ➞ v₂ = (3 × 10⁸)/1.5

  • ➞ v₂ = 2 × 10⁸ m/s

∴ The velocity of light in glass is 2 × 10⁸ m/s

Answer ⤵️⤵️

Glass refractive index is defined as the ratio between the speed of light in the vacuum and the speed of light in the glass.

Refractive index of glass (ng) = Speed of light in vacuum/speed of light in the glass.

ng = (3 ×108)/ (2 ×108)

ng = 1.5

Hope it helps ♡︎
