French colonization of Vietnam was based on which two ideas?
Answers
Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes was the first Frenchman to visit Vietnam during early 17th century. He returned to Europe and decided to send bishops to Vietnam to establish Christianity there. He feared that like Japan, Christianity will be completely erased from Vietnam too as the kings were powerful and good in war. He believed it was necessary for Asians to accept christianity else they will die without visiting churches anfd face punishment after death. Many bishops were sent but expelled by the brave ruler then (Trinh Tac) One bishop was working under cover of French East Indian Company.
Vietnam already saw great enmity between two big clans. The trinh clans defeated Nguyen and then out of this hatred, Emperor Gia Long (Nguyen ruler) associated with a French priest and obtained treaty with France. (Treaty with Versailles). In return for this, Gia gave exclusive trading rights to French.
This gives birth to second idea- trading monopoly.
France enjoyed trading rights and got influence over the country. After the death of Gia Long, new ruler Minh Mang did not follow his idea. He gave official orders prohibiting foreign missionaries. He believed that western religion is ruining the mind of people and making them evil.
Many successors followed the same idea and the relations between France and Vietnam became worse. All this after years led to the war and colonization of Vietnam.
