French revolution is the milestone in world history. The French Revolution was the beginning of modern human rights (the US Bill of Rights bears more comparison to the Magna Carta than a modern human rights document). It was also the beginning of modern democracy being taken seriously in a metropolitan country rather than just a curious backwater, which was what the US was regarded as at the time. And it was the beginning of state run tax systems, state run education, fiat currency (not pegged to gold), the beginning of the draft (for better or worse), the beginning of the left in the modern sense, the first time Jewish people had rights as citizens, the beginning of citizens rather than subjects.
