The French society was divided into three estates i. e.. clergy, nobles and peasants.

the peasants made up 90 percent of the population, however only a small number of them owned land. About 60 percent of land was owned by nobles, church and some richer members of the third estate.

The members of the first and second estate enjoyed certain privileges by birth. Most important of those were exemption from paying taxes to the state.

Nobles enjoyed feudal privileges which included feudal duels taken from the peasants. Peasants were obliged to render services to the Lord/nobles.

The church too extracted it's share of taxes called tithe ( one tenth of agricultural produce) from the peasants.

The third estate paid a direct tax called taille and a number of indirect taxes to the state
