Answer:

Advantages of friction:

1. Friction enables us to walk freely.

2. It helps to support ladder against wall.

3. It becomes possible to transfer one form of energy to another.

4. Objects can be piled up without slipping.

5. Breaks of vehicles work due to friction.

Disadvantages of friction:

1.It always resists the motion, so extra energy is required to overcome it.

2.It causes wear and tear of machines.

3.It decreases the life expectancy of moving parts of vehicles.

4.Since friction is very useful in some cases while harmful in some cases, friction is called a necessary evil.

Explanation:

Friction is a type of force which opposes the relative motion of a body. It have many advantages and disadvantages. And we need to list them out from a list of actions:

  • Walking
  • Writing
  • Wearing out shoes
  • Igniting the matchstick
  • Gripping an object.

So, we will imagine it in a way that what will happen if friction wouldn't be there for these actions? And we can figure out whether it will be useful or not useful for that action.

(a) Walking

  • Friction helps in walking because if friction wouldn't be there then, we will slip easily. In rainy season, the rain on the road decreases the friction and we slip easily. [ADVANTAGE]

(b) Writing

  • The friction allows our hand to have grip on the pen or pencil we are using. If there wouldn't be any friction, then our hands must have slip and we won't be able to write because of no grip. [ADVANTAGE]

(c) Wearing out Shoes

  • Due to friction, the wearing of shoes is not useful at all because it is damaging the shoes. Also it is destroying the soles hence in this case, it is a [DISADVANTAGE]

(d) Igniting the matchstick

  • Friction gives rise to evolution of heat. The heat cause the matchstick to burn and we use matchstick for this purpose only. So, this is an [ADVANTAGE] in this case.

(e) Gripping an object

  • Friction helps an object to have grip and connection with other. We can hold and grab something when their is friction. Otherwise, it will slip out from our hands. So, it is a [ADVANTAGE]

So we can conclude that,

  1. Advantage - Walking, Writing, Igniting a matchstick and Gripping an object.
  2. Disadvantage - Wearing out shoes.

And we are done classifying !!
