• Friction is a force which results in the relative motion of the surface.

• All types of surfaces like solid, liquid and air offer the force of friction.

• Friction force always applies in the opposite direction of movement.

• Friction is applied when two surfaces in contact move relatively to each other.

• Examples:

1. A moving wheel on the ground stops after covering a certain distance because surface offers opposite direction friction to the surface of the wheel in motion.

2. After applying brakes to a moving bike, the surface of brakes offers friction to the surface of the moving wheel and the bicycle stops because of force of friction.

3. Gently push a book on a table. It stops after moving some distance because of friction between surface of book and table.
