Friction is caused mainly due to factors stated below :-

1. Roughness of surface and object
2. Adhesive forces
3. Deformations formed in surface

Let's get a brief idea on all the 3 reasons

1. Solids have a greater degree of roughness. Though this factor doesn't contribute to friction much still it does have a say. What may seem as smooth surface , has a great number of tiny bumps when viewed through powerful microscope. Greater the roughness of object and the surface in contact greater is the friction caused due to abrasions . Sometimes ,due to large amount of friction , the surfaces suffer from wear and tear. Example - Sand paper rubbed over walls. Due to greater friction( abrasions) the sand paper gets worn out.

2. Sometimes when an object is brought to the surface of contact , a force is exerted on them which is called Adhesive Force. Due to this, the object and the surface in contact stick together which is nothing but friction. To make the object slide over the surface, requires breaking of these adhesion bonds. Example - Water drop sticking to glass pane. The force of friction prevents the water drop from sliding over.
Even if the adhesion over millions of tiny spaces are broken, then also water drop advances over next area of tiny spaces that exert adhesion. That's why the water drop slides slowly down the glass panel breaking the adhesion.

3. Deformations are usually seen in soft bodies i.e they bend down when pressure is applied. These deformations then form resistive force that doesn't allow an object to move.
For example - A submarine in sea. The submarine exerts force inside water that causes deformations in the water. So it experiences resistive forces by water. In order to tackle this, the body of submarine is streamlined so as to cut through the the resistive force by water.

Hope This Helps You!
