Friction is a necessary evil.... and so a friend and an enemy. This is because :-

• ADVANTAGES:- (Friction is our friend)

1. Help us walk.
2. Move the vehicles as tyres have grooves to increase friction otherwise the vehicle would have skid.
3. Spiked shoes increase friction for better grips.
4. We are able to write due to friction between tip of pen/pencil and paper.
5. Application of brakes in automobile and bicycles.
6. Lighting of matchsticks: When we strike a matchstick against the rough surface of matchbox, it catches fire. The force of friction raises the temperature of matchstick's head to such an extent that the chemicals in it catch fire to produce flame.
7. Fixing of screws and nails into the wall.

• Disadvantages:- (Friction is our enemy)

1. Causes damage to the machines.
2. Causes wear and tear reducing the lifetime of an appliance.
3. Loss of energy: Extra energy is spent in overcoming friction.
4. Reduces the efficiency of machines.
