Friction always oppose relative motion... This is essential as we can walk, run, and do so many things with friction..

Explanation: Some times we increase friction for ex: Braking a car, Helps an object to stop sliding, we require friction otherwise when we push an object on the ground it would go on forever (assuming air resistance is negligible)

FRICTION ISN'T WASTEFUL!! IT IS VERY USEFUL!!
