This answer is in context of the French Society during the Old Regime .
First Estate :
The first estate referred to the clergy or the members of the church .
Second Estate -
The second estate referred to the nobles who were considered privileged by birth .
Third Estate -
The third estate referred to the commoners namely the pheasants , shopkeepers , watch makers , workers etc .
Additional Information :
The first and second estate comprised of only 4% of the entire population .
The third estate attributed for more than 90% of the population.
The members of the first and the second Estate , though less in number , held over 60% of the total land .
They were exempted from takes and we're allowed to levy taxes on the third estate like tithe , taille , and other dues etc .
