It is true Fritz managed to save Lutkins without much effort. Lutkins, disguised as Bill drove the narrator to Fritz’s shop. He had told him that he would be playing a game of poker there. When they reached there, Bill asked Fritz if Lutkins was there at his shop. Fritz understood Bill was playing prank on the narrator. He decided to save Bill. He replied that he had left his shop just a few minutes before. He could be found at Gustaff’s shop.  

Fritz could easily have told the truth to the narrator that the man carrying him was actually Lutkins. Thus just with one lie he saved Lutkins.
