Frogs and fishes lay hundreds of eggs at a time however their population is very little a compared to the number of eggs they lay because:

  • This is due to the fact that some of the eggs and sperms may be exposed to water movement, wind, and rainfall and thus be destroyed.
  • Furthermore, these factors can sometimes prevent sperm from reaching the eggs.

As a result, a large number of eggs and sperms must be produced (as in the case of frogs and fish) to ensure that at least a few of them are fertilised.
